Role Of The R&A

The R&A is committed to promoting and developing golf both nationally and internationally. Two factors make this possible. One is the annual surplus from the Open Championship and the other is the position of influence held globally by The R&A. Combined, these give scope for the worldwide advancement of golf.

Through its External Funds Supervisory Committee, The R&A provides financial support for coaching programmes and for junior golf through various organisations including the Golf Foundation. It also supports national organisations running international championships and bodies such as the Ladies' Golf Union.

Always looking to the future, The R&A formed its own Golf Course Committee. This Committee takes a lead in and offers advice on all aspects of golf course presentation and management worldwide, paying particular attention to environmental and ecological issues. It provides encouragement and support for research projects and is particularly concerned with offering assistance in countries where golf is still in its infancy.

A University Bursary Scheme is run by The R&A. It is aimed at assisting promising players who wish to devote time to competitive amateur golf while studying. Two bursaries are awarded every year to educational institutions in Great Britain and Ireland that are currently in the scheme. The student athlete concept is promoted by the scheme, which is being viewed increasingly as a viable alternative to the US collegiate programme.

The R&A is highly conscious of the need and obligation to serve the game worldwide.
